My new site

I have officially finished my company website - www.salmonrunmedia.com

Granted, it's taken me two years, but I figured that if I was ever going to make a real push to be legit - and legit it is - I'd need to put my money where my mouth was. Anyway, it's a strange mix of my work and interests - combining my consulting and documentary film, which I hope to do more of in the future.

Hope you enjoy -
Nathaniel

Lucky Skydiver Survives 5000 foot Free Fall - Amazing Video Footage!

Experienced skydiver Michael Holmes survived a free fall from 5,000 feet over New Zealand's Lake Taupo, and the whole thing was caught on tape by two cameras. It happened two months ago. The cameras were on Holmes' helmet and the helmet of fellow skydiver Jonathan King. Holmes was plummeting to the Earth at 70 mph. He pulled the cord for his main parachute at 4,000 feet, but it didn't fully open, even though it caught enough air to violently spin him around. Seconds later, he pulled the cable to free his main chute, but it was snared in his harness and wouldn't break away.

At 2,000 feet, he faced a dire choice: release his reserve chute, which could tangle in the main chute and completely wipe out the little lift he had, or ride it out with the main chute only, hoping it would fully inflate before he hit the ground. He had to make a decision in seconds. After 700 feet, he knew the reserve chute would make little difference. He decided to release his reserve chute. As he feared, it snagged in the main chute and failed to open. Holmes was now 15 seconds from impact.

He waved good-bye to the camera at 530 feet and believed he was going to die. Michael crashed into a thicket of blackberry bushes. King swooped down to his side.

"Talk to me, bro," King asked Holmes. "Talk to me, man. You OK?"

"No," Holmes answered.

He was not OK, but incredibly, Holmes was alive. After falling into the blackberry bush, his lung had been punctured and he had a broken ankle, the BBC reported.

Peace, Propaganda & The Promised Land

Peace, Propaganda & the Promised Land provides a striking comparison of U.S. and international media coverage of the crisis in the Middle East, zeroing in on how structural distortions in U.S. coverage have reinforced false perceptions of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This pivotal documentary exposes how the foreign policy interests of American political elites--oil, and a need to have a secure military base in the region, among others--work in combination with Israeli public relations strategies to exercise a powerful influence over how news from the region is reported.
Through the voices of scholars, media critics, peace activists, religious figures, and Middle East experts, Peace, Propaganda & the Promised Land carefully analyzes and explains how--through the use of language, framing and context--the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza remains hidden in the news media, and Israeli colonization of the occupied terrorities appears to be a defensive move rather than an offensive one. The documentary also explores the ways that U.S. journalists, for reasons ranging from intimidation to a lack of thorough investigation, have become complicit in carrying out Israel's PR campaign. At its core, the documentary raises questions about the ethics and role of journalism, and the relationship between media and politics.

Camera Image Search - Compare Digital Camera Images with an image search!

The idea is to let people search for photos based on the camera that took the photo and it's settings. Many cameras create JPEG files with this kind of data embedded in EXIF tags, so the plan is to find these files, extract the information, and create an index.

Jumping Jacks

And I thought I had gymnastic skills...these guys are CRAZY. It's a bit long, and could be edited down, but it's a fun video if you've got 10 minutes to kill. Here's a link to a site that promotes this kind of urban stunting.

Nacho Libre

Perhaps I've just been out of the loop...but while watching MI III last night, the trailer for jarred Hess's (director and writer of Napoleon dynamite) new film played and I developed a sharp cramp in my side from laughing so hard but trying to contain it. The film is called Nacho Libre and stars Jack Black. Here is the wiki entry on the film and here's a link to the trailer. Enjoy.
